"No, not that one either." Heero sounded exasperated for some reason that I certainly could not fathom. I looked down at the t-shirt I was holding up.
"You don't think 'Blondes Have More Fun' is an honorable motto to live by?" I snickered and put it back. I was enjoying shopping at Wal*Mart quite a bit.
Heero eyed the shirt speculatively. "Maybe for Trowa."
I laughed, flipping the tag over to look at the price. "Hello, early birthday present..." I added it to the cart for fun, figuring that Trowa would probably wear the t-shirt just to shock everyone. "Ooh, now this one really goes with your image." I slanted the sweater so that Heero could see it. He tilted his head, frowning slightly.
"'Getting the girl since 1989,'" he read outloud. Heero looked back up, smirking. "I didn't know you were female, Duo. Something you'd care to tell me?"
I should've seen that coming. "Shut up. Don't make me recommend you for a full-body evaluation with Sally."
"You mean recommend me again." Heero winced. "May I never have to go through that again. Besides, you're the one with the questionable gender. What about this?"
I squashed the urge to kick Heero and instead I stared flatly at the plain, oversized sweatshirt that Heero was gesturing towards. "Oh, yeah. You're a real trendsetter."
Heero shrugged, a smile creeping onto his face. "Just waiting for baggy clothes to make their comeback. It'll be soon, I can feel it."
"Feel it flapping around you more likely. How do you wear clothes that are so loose?" I poked his arm. "I had to travel at least three inches after encountering the shirt just to touch you!"
He tugged me over, wrapping his arms around my waist. "If you wanted to touch me you could have just said something."
I rolled my eyes nervously, looking around. "Heero, if someone recognizes us and reports us to Une..."
Heero snorted, hugging tighter when I tried to move. "Because so many of our Preventers colleagues shop at Wal*Mart?"
"Hey, I'll have you know I think I probably spotted one of our engineers around here." I rested my hands reluctantly on Heero's shoulders. He raised an eyebrow and waited.
I sighed. Heero was a little too good at reading me. "Okay, someone who looked a LOT like one of our engineers. Still, it's close enough! I hear that Tim down in Intel has a twin brother, so you never know..."
"Right." Heero stepped back nonetheless, reaching for something on the Clearance shelf. I almost felt disappointed, but this was better. We wouldn't have been allowed to remain partners if Une really did find out about us.
"What about this?"
"Hm?" I looked up.
Oh god. I almost dropped the hanger I'd been currently holding. "Uh...Heero? You alright in there?"
Heero had a hooded sweatshirt on over his clothes, the hood over his eyes and the strings pulled tight so that I could only see a part of his nose and his mouth. He reached blindly for me and I numbly let him grope around for awhile, extremely glad he couldn't see at the moment.
"Just because I'm temporarily blind doesn't mean I can't hear you laughing, Duo."
Damn. I muffled it to a snicker. "What are you doing?"
"This way no one can recognize us, right?" My only slightly insane lover asked, his words a bit muffled by the thick cotton of the shirt. "We could do anything and get away with it."
"Please, like I'm going to kiss you now. You look like a Darth Vader version of an Abercrombie model." I snorted at the thought. "You tell me you're my father and I'll have to break your arm."
Heero tugged the sweatshirt off, smirking, his hair even more messed up than before. "It seemed like a good idea at first."
I laughed and gave him a brief kiss before I broke away, an idea popping into my mind.
"You know, if you really want a good disguise," I said thoughtfully, starting to grin meaningfully at Heero's feet, "I hear that Wal*Mart has a great shoe collection..."
-the end!!- for now. Just wait for the imaginary sequel...WHEN HOODED SWEATSHIRTS FIGHT BACK and/or Une's reaction when she reads the latest tabloid headline of "Preventers Agent In Love With Wal*Mart Sweatshirts" XDD
